For many teens, braces are a rite of passage, and are another example of the changes adolescents go through at this time. There are several great reasons why this is the optimal time for orthodontic treatment, though occasionally even earlier treatment is needed. The first reason has to do with the development of the teeth: generally by the age of 11-13, the baby teeth have all been lost, and the permanent teeth have come in. This is the perfect time we can start working to correct the problems that cause a bad bite, crowding of the teeth, or improper tooth spacing.
Orthodontic problems don’t improve with age, and often become harder to treat as time continues. It is often easier to treat many orthodontic problems during adolescence because the body is still growing rapidly at this time. Whether we use braces or appliances, we can create an improved appearance and function of the teeth in a short period of time. As we age, the bones of the face and jaw are fully developed, and many conditions become more difficult and costly to treat.
If you need braces as a teen, you’re not alone! Chances are you’ll see some of your classmates in our office, and may even make new friends as you go through the process together. When treatment is finished, you’ll have a smile that you can really be proud of, and a healthy bite that will last you a lifetime.
